Raised bed with retaining wall blocks

How to create this raised bed using retaining wall blocks

Raised wall garden bed

Supplies needed:

  1. Plastic for bed floor (black-non transparent)
  2. Miracle Grow Potting mix (or any mix you prefer)
  3. Retaining wall blocks (I used 12"W x 4"H)
  4. Bark chips (beauty bark, etc.)
  5. Watering system (hoses, valve, water timer)
  6. Tape measure
  7. String (used as a guide)
  8. Small rake & shovel

Step 1:

Clear the area you wish to place your raised bed. Use a shovel and rake to level the surface and remove weeds, etc.

Step 2:

Determine the sizes of your raised beds and purchase the blocks. My beds are roughly 12' X 4' and it took 32 blocks per level. I have two levels high per raised bed so I used 64 blocks for one bed.

Step 3:

Use tape measure and string to layout each bed location. I kept 3' clearance per bed exterior.

Step 4:

Place plastic over area you wish to cover to help prevent weed growth and slow down moles. Using the string as a guide lay down the blocks end to end along the string guide.

Step 5:

After the blocks are all in place and leveled, add potting mix. My beds each used 10 bags of Miracle grow potting mix (60lb.) bags.

Step 6:

Place bark chips (or your preference of ground cover) around the raised beds to reduce weed growth.

Step 7:

Run water hoses to each raised bed, attach drip hoses to each hose and place them in the raised beds. Attach a valve to control water flow to each bed and a water timer (if preferred) to control watering cycle.

Step 8:

Plant seeds in the beds or plants ready to plant.

That is it, you are ready to enjoy a raised bed that allows better control of weeds and less back strain. The retaining wall provides a place to sit while picking your harvest.
